Adirondack Outdoors - Basic Adirondack Chair

The basic range is offered as a way for everybody to enjoy the comfort and style of an Adirondack Outdoors hand made chair at a more affordable price.

Since we started building chairs in 1997 we have been asked from time to time for a more affordable chair. While we still believe that the extra features of our Classic and Florida range are worth the extra investment, we now, at last, have the capacity to also provide the lower priced alternative.

We achieve the reduction in cost simply by making some of the same design choices that the makers of other lower priced chairs have always made. The four main differences are :-

1- The Basic Range is only available in Western Red Cedar. This is not because Cedar is cheap or in some way inferior. In fact it is one of the more expensive timbers that we use but it is also much "friendlier" to work with than the other two timbers and again that saves us some time which saves you some money. Concentrating on Cedar also helps us to manage our stock of timber a little more easily. Cedar is a naturally durable timber and is generally rated for 15+ years resistance to decay in ground contact.

2 - We leave most of the screws used in assembly visible rather than hiding them beneath wooden plugs. This saves a great deal of time and enables us to pass on the savings in the price. There are in fact 4 screws which we still hide beneath wooden plugs, because they would otherwise be clearly visible while you are actually sitting in the chair and it seemed a shame not to hide just those four!
3 - We use stainless steel fittings on the Basic range. It is worth noting that most of the other Adirondack chairs that we have seen in the years that we have been making our furniture have used zinc plated fittings which are cheaper than stainless steel and, in our experience, the zinc plating is always liable to fail with messy results.

4 - We do not roundover the edges of all the components on the Basic chair, reserving this time consuming treatment for the edges of the arms (top and bottom edges) and the edges of the seat slats. We still do these because they make a real practical difference to the comfort of the chair.

We believe that the Basic range represents a chair equal in quality to any other currently on offer in the UK. We could make it a bit cheaper if we used non-durable softwood like pine to make it, or if we used cheaper fittings. But we believe that these represent false economies and prefer to offer what we believe is a comfortable, durable, good looking chair at a great price.

Just for the sake of clarity - these prices are not for kits and are not for chairs made up from imported kits. We make all our chairs ourselves in the UK. You will receive a chair which has been completely built and then disassembled just enough to get it into a box and ship it to you at an economical price. It will arrive as a seat assembly, back assembly and two arms. Reassembly is straightforward - requires only a screwdriver and takes about 5-10 minutes per chair.
